Move matters at the pace of clients

A matter stalls because nobody chased a missing document.

You will recognise it
  1. A matter stalls because a document was never chased.
  2. Deadlines are tracked in several diaries.
  3. The client sees the delay before the firm does.

Work piles up at the same checkpoint.

On an engagement

2022-2023 · French litigation firm · 9 partners · about 1,600 active matters

Partners knew how many matters were open, not which ones were late, blocked or waiting for a document. 38% of matters reviewed had at least one missing document, the average duration reached 94 days, and tracking lived in four different files. An old matter looked active although nothing had moved for weeks.

We built a matter-level dashboard in SharePoint and Power BI: owner, stage, deadline, blocker, next action, with automatic reminders for missing documents. Steering covers the matters, not a ranking of lawyers. In seven months, the average duration went from 94 to 71 days, and matters with missing documents from 38% to 9%.

What changes

The client waits for progress, the matter waits for a document. A view of deadlines and missing documents, with reminders that go out on their own, stops a matter stalling without anyone noticing.
