Know where legal time goes

Nobody really knows where the team’s time goes.

You will recognise it
  1. You can’t say how many requests come in each month.
  2. A new hire is argued on impressions.
  3. Time spent on routine work shows up nowhere.

What happens along the way cannot be seen.

On an engagement

2022 · French industrial group · 6 lawyers · 1,900 requests a year

The CFO asked: “Your activity is up 18%. Does that mean you need 18% more resources?” Legal could not answer. It tracked three indicators, 40% of files had no usable category, and every monthly report took more than two days to consolidate.

We set one rule: data must come from the work, not be added on top of it. A minimal model (request, type, complexity, stake, outcome) and six indicators, in Excel, SharePoint and Power BI. In six months, uncategorised files fell from 40% to 4%, reporting takes a few hours, and legal can say what consumes its capacity.

What changes

Without a survey, legal time gets described instead of counted. A few indicators are enough: what comes in, from where, how long it takes to go back out and what should never have arrived.

What we put in place

A few weeks of activity tracking with no new tool, then a dashboard the team maintains.
